As winter arrives, the number of people using warm electric heating pads before bedtime tends to increase. However, it is crucial to be aware of the risk of fire accidents during this time. According to the Gyeonggi Fire Disaster Headquarters, the number of heating device-related fires in the Gyeonggi region over the past three years was 499 in 2020, 543 in 2021, and 562 last year, totaling 1604 incidents. One of the main causes of these accidents has been identified as carelessness. Therefore, especially when using electric heating pads, it is essential to be cautious to safely heat your space during the winter. Let's explore the proper usage guidelines.
Do Not Use with Latex Mats
Electric heating pads should not be used with natural rubber latex mats. Placing latex mats on a hot electric heating pad or using them underneath can lead to a fire. This risk is particularly high when using thick latex mats, as the heat may be trapped, causing temperatures to rise significantly. In an experiment conducted by the Busan Fire Disaster Headquarters, it was confirmed that placing latex bedding on an electric heating pad resulted in smoke generation when the internal temperature of the product rose to 170 degrees after 3 hours. Therefore, it is advisable to use a thin blanket on the heating pad or, if unavoidable, cover it with a lid to prevent heat accumulation.
Avoid Folding Electric Heating Pads
Folding an electric heating pad is strictly prohibited. Folding the pad can cause issues such as wire breakage, entanglement leading to short circuits, and overheating. Therefore, it is recommended to store the electric heating pad without folding it to prevent damage to the heating wires even when not in use.
Use at Lower Temperatures
To use an electric heating pad safely, avoid extended usage at excessively high temperatures. Especially during sleep, it is advisable to set a timer or keep the pad at a lower temperature. Sleeping with the pad set too high poses a risk of low-temperature burns. Additionally, it is essential not to connect multiple devices to a single outlet and to develop a habit of turning off the power after use.
Do Not Place the Temperature Controller on the Mat
Exercise caution not to place the temperature controller on the electric heating pad. The heat generated by the pad can cause the temperature controller to overheat, leading to malfunctions and an increased risk of fire. Furthermore, the plastic of the temperature controller may melt, posing a fire hazard from the internal wiring.
To ensure a safe winter, it is crucial to be well-informed about the precautions for using electric heating pads and to use them correctly. Strict adherence to safety guidelines is especially important to prevent fire accidents due to negligence.
