A Cup of Tea for Tranquility and Lowering Diabetes Risk.

by OK2BU 2023. 10. 18.

Research has shown that consistently drinking a cup of tea every day can help prevent type 2 diabetes. Research teams from the University of Adelaide in Australia and Dongnan University in China found that any type of tea can have an effect in reducing the risk of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

The findings of this study, which suggest that the risk of type 2 diabetes can be reduced through a simple daily habit, are expected to be a significant contribution to maintaining health.

According to the research, people who especially consume black tea daily have a 53% reduced likelihood of developing pre-diabetes and a 47% reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who do not drink tea at all. Those who prefer other types of tea, such as green tea or oolong tea, also showed a 15% lower risk of pre-diabetes and a 28% lower risk of diabetes.

Black tea is a fermented tea produced in China through microbial fermentation and oxidation processes. After fermentation, the tea leaves turn dark, hence the name "black tea," and it is rich in beneficial microorganisms that support gut health. Pu-erh tea is one variety of black tea.

Dr. Tongzhi Wu, who led the study, explained, "Tea contains numerous desirable effects, such as reducing inflammation, oxidation, and improving insulin sensitivity." He further stated, "This study, for the first time, demonstrates a link between tea consumption and increased insulin secretion, which could contribute to better blood sugar control."

The research team added, "Bioactive compounds in tea have a direct and indirect effect on regulating glucose excretion from the kidneys, which can have a protective effect on the kidneys and be effective in preventing diabetes."

This research was recently presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) held in Hamburg, Germany. Further research results regarding the blood sugar regulation effects of black tea are expected to be announced in the future.
