As the popularity of outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and outdoor adventures continues to rise, the demand for outdoor clothing, including outdoor jackets, has also significantly increased. In response to this trend, the Korea Consumer Agency has conducted tests and evaluations on eight outdoor jacket products that are highly favored by consumers, focusing on their various features and quality, and has released the results.
The outdoor jacket products tested by the Korea Consumer Agency are as follows
Nepa 'Men's Eco GORE-TEX Packlight Plus Waterproof Jacket'
The North Face 'M’S SUPER VENT JACKET'
Millet 'Pantalon GTX Packlight Plus Jacket'
Black Yak 'M-Sunlight AWC Jacket #1'
Eider 'Core PAC Alpha Packlight Waterproof Jacket'
Columbia 'Men's MaJaMart Trail Shell Jacket'
K2 'ALP GORE Packlight Jacket'
Kolon Sport 'Men's GORE-TEX Packlight Jacket'
Summarizing the test results by the Korea Consumer Agency
1. Water Resistance Test
Water resistance assesses the ability of outdoor jackets to effectively repel rain and snow. The test results indicated that the fabric portions of all products exhibited "excellent" or "good" water resistance. However, in the case of products from The North Face and Black Yak, the water resistance of the stitched areas was relatively weaker compared to the fabric portions and was rated as "fair."
2. Moisture Permeability Test
Moisture permeability measures the ability of the jacket to expel internal moisture vapor to the outside. The product from The North Face displayed "excellent" moisture permeability, ensuring comfortable wear. The remaining six products were rated as "good," while the Black Yak product was rated as "fair" in this aspect.
3. Water Repellency Test
Water repellency assesses the jacket's ability to shed water from its surface. Initially, all products exhibited a water repellency rating of 5 (the highest grade). However, after seven washes, the Black Yak product's water repellency decreased to grade 2, indicating a decline in performance. On the other hand, Millet, Eider, K2, and Kolon Sport products maintained good water repellency even after washing.
4. Safety and Usability Test
In terms of safety and usability, all products met the standards, ensuring their safe use. Additionally, criteria related to zipper functionality, color changes, contamination due to washing, and shrinkage were all satisfied by every product.
5. Price-to-Performance Ratio
In this survey, the price-to-performance ratio of the products is worth noting. The Black Yak product was the most affordable at KRW 299,000, while the Millet product was the most expensive at KRW 489,000.
The Korea Consumer Agency has released the results of its investigation, verifying the functionality and quality of outdoor jackets for those who enjoy outdoor activities. This information allows consumers to make informed decisions, considering the performance relative to the price, and enhances the safety and comfort of outdoor adventures. We express our gratitude to the Korea Consumer Agency for their efforts in making outdoor activities safer and more enjoyable.
