One of the frequently encountered advertisements in local clinics and hospitals is for "Vitamin D injections." However, we aim to share information about the effects and potential side effects of these injections to help individuals make informed decisions.

The Reality of Vitamin D Deficiency

According to the Korean Medical Association, 96.8% of Korean men and 93.9% of women experience vitamin D deficiency. This stems from insufficient exposure to sunlight or inadequate intake of vitamin D in daily life. This deficiency becomes even more critical, especially during the summer when spending time indoors is common.

As awareness of vitamin D deficiency increases, so does the demand for vitamin D injections.

Consequences of Vitamin D Deficiency

When vitamin D levels are inadequate, various health problems can arise. Generally, a level of 20-50 μg/mL is considered appropriate, and deficiency is evaluated when it falls below 12 μg/mL. This deficiency not only affects bone health but is also associated with various diseases.

Effects and Side Effects of High-Dose Vitamin D Injections

The Vitamin D injections promoted in local clinics contain more than 100 times the content of oral supplements. Typically costing 30,000 to 50,000 won per injection, a 5 mL ampule contains around 200,000 IU of vitamin D. However, excessive consumption of this vitamin D can lead to hypercalcemia.

Risks of Hypercalcemia

Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption, and elevated vitamin D levels can cause hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia refers to a condition where blood calcium levels are above 10.5 mg/dL or ionized calcium is above 4.2 mg/dL. It can lead to symptoms such as loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, muscle weakness, fatigue, and even conditions like kidney stones.

Considerations for Making Informed Choices

In cases of vitamin D deficiency, when oral supplements are challenging due to absorption or digestive issues, injections may be considered. However, for the general population without specific issues, resolving deficiency can be achieved through oral vitamin D supplements or exposure to sunlight. It's essential to note that sunscreen should not be used during sun exposure, as even low SPF sunscreens can block up to 95% of vitamin D synthesis.

As awareness of vitamin D deficiency increases, so does the demand for vitamin D injections. However, for safe and effective vitamin D intake, expert advice and appropriate testing are necessary. Indiscriminate consumption can potentially harm health, so careful consideration based on one's health condition is crucial.
