Dry eye syndrome is a term encompassing all symptoms related to dryness of the eye surface, with the correct term being "dry eye syndrome." These symptoms can manifest as eye irritation, foreign body sensation, dryness, redness, and excessive tearing. Particularly, exposure to cold winds or air can lead to symptoms of excessive tearing, which is related to dry eye syndrome.

Dryness of the eye surface causing redness or a gritty sensation is also a part of the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. Additionally, reflex tearing due to factors like wind or dust is also included in this. To cope with these symptoms, many resort to wiping away excess tears with a handkerchief or tissue. However, caution is necessary as wiping may worsen the symptoms in some cases.

Proper Management

In cases where excessive tearing occurs physically, wiping may seem inevitable. However, this can lead to side effects such as eyelid irritation and conjunctivitis. To prevent this, wearing goggles or protective eyewear to reduce external stimuli can be helpful. Additionally, preemptively using artificial tears to reduce eye irritation is effective.

Causes and Treatment

Dry eye syndrome can stem not only from issues with the eyes themselves but also from systemic problems throughout the body. Understanding the underlying cause is crucial for resolution. Factors contributing to dry eye syndrome include allergic inflammation of the conjunctiva, stiffness of the muscles around the eyes, chronic fatigue, and sleep disorders. Moreover, immune system dysregulation and hormonal imbalances related to aging can also be implicated.

Eye-specific issues such as blepharitis, keratitis, and chronic conjunctivitis also contribute to dry eye syndrome. Treatments for these conditions may include warm compresses, meibomian gland expression, and medication therapy. Recently, therapeutic devices like IPL (intense pulsed light) have also been utilized.

Relationship between Neck Muscles and Eye Health

Eye health is closely related to the condition of the neck and shoulders. Particularly, when muscles such as the trapezius, levator scapulae, and sternocleidomastoid become tense or shortened, it can adversely affect eye health. Overloading the trapezius muscle can exacerbate eye discomfort and dryness. Therefore, regular stretching of the neck and shoulders is important for maintaining eye health.
