Iceland, often dubbed the land of natural wonders, has announced plans to introduce a tourism tax, garnering global attention. In this news, we'll delve into the significant issues surrounding Iceland's tourism industry and the environment.

 

Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir, who attended the 2023 UN Climate Goals Summit in New York, revealed the plan to introduce a tourism tax. The tax is presented under the guise of enhancing climate change mitigation and sustainability efforts, with the exact tax rate and costs yet to be disclosed.

 

This decision represents a significant step as Iceland prepares for the future and pursues sustainable development.

 

Prime Minister Jakobsdóttir stated, "Over the past decade, Iceland's tourism industry has grown exponentially, and its impact extends beyond climate change," adding that the tax would initially be "relatively low." The tourism tax will be imposed based on the duration of tourists' stays and is scheduled to take effect in 2024.

 

The Icelandic government is working closely with the tourism industry to prepare for the introduction of the tourism tax. They are particularly focused on promoting changes like the transition to electric vehicles with an emphasis on sustainability.

 

Prime Minister Jakobsdóttir has set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. To achieve this, Iceland plans to utilize geothermal heating and undertake carbon capture efforts. In 2022, Iceland welcomed 1.7 million tourists, marking a 146% increase compared to 2021. However, it remains 31% lower than the record-breaking number of tourists recorded in 2018. As of August this year, Iceland had hosted approximately 1.5 million tourists, and if this trend continues, it is expected to reach around 2.3 million annual visitors.
