by OK2BU 2023. 10. 25.

The reality of over 240,000 domestic cancer patients arising in just one year is staggering. Among them, there are 130,618 men and 117,334 women, underscoring that cancer is a significant health issue in our society. Furthermore, with statistics indicating that 3 to 4 out of 10 individuals could be affected by cancer if they live to their expected lifespan, cancer has become a familiar presence for us all.

We all must equip ourselves with accurate knowledge about cancer, and exert efforts towards prevention and early screening. This is the best approach for the health of both ourselves and our families.

However, the recent substantial increase in cancer survival rates in the past few years brings a glimmer of hope. The 5-year relative survival rate for cancer patients from 2016 to 2020 is estimated at 71.5%, implying that more than 7 out of 10 individuals could survive for over 5 years. Compared to patients diagnosed from 2001 to 2005, the survival rate for patients diagnosed in the past 5 years has increased by 17.4 percentage points. This can be attributed to significant advancements in cancer treatment and management, with an even greater 6.0 percentage point increase compared to patients diagnosed from 2006 to 2010.

Moreover, the fact that survival rates for women are higher than for men presents an intriguing finding. Women exhibit a 77.8% survival rate, likely influenced by a higher incidence of thyroid and breast cancers in females. Thus, cancer is a potential risk factor for anyone, emphasizing the critical importance of early detection and prevention.

However, it is a reality that specific symptoms are rare in the early stages of cancer. Cancer can manifest various symptoms depending on its type, size, and location, often without presenting systemic symptoms in the early stages. These non-specific symptoms can lead to confusion with other illnesses, underscoring the increased importance of accurate diagnosis and early treatment.

As cancer grows, it may exert pressure on surrounding organs or structures, leading to the appearance of signs and symptoms. However, this too varies depending on the characteristics of each type of cancer. Therefore, regular health check-ups and the habit of consulting with specialists immediately if any unusual signs arise are crucial.

In addition, we must actively strive for cancer prevention. Quitting smoking, diversifying vegetable and fruit intake, and maintaining a balanced diet are fundamental steps. Furthermore, reducing sugary foods, moderate alcohol consumption, consistent exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight are essential. Regular vaccinations, practicing safe sexual activity, and adhering to safety and health regulations in the workplace are also vital components of cancer prevention.
