In autumn, appetites tend to increase, not only for humans but also for our pets. While chubby pets may look cute, obesity can increase the risk of various diseases such as diabetes, endocrine disorders, arthritis, and even cancer. Recognizing the severity of pet obesity, organizations like the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) and the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA) have officially classified it as a disease.
According to a recent study on pet life expectancy by Royal Canin, the life expectancy of obese dogs was found to be approximately 1.5 times shorter than that of dogs with a healthy weight. Similarly, studies have shown that for cats, as their weight approaches normal, their life expectancy increases. So, how can we manage our beloved pets' weight to enjoy their company for a long time?
Assessing Proper Weight: Body Condition Score (BCS)
Firstly, it's important to determine whether a pet exceeds a healthy weight. Pet obesity can be assessed using the Body Condition Score (BCS). This involves manually feeling the ribs, spine, and pelvis of the pet, and dividing the assessment into nine stages to diagnose obesity.
BCS 4-5 (Optimal Weight): A slight waistline and a visible outline of ribs. The ribs are covered with an appropriate layer of fat. It feels similar to running your fingers over the back of your hand where you can feel the long bones. From BCS 6 onwards, it corresponds to overweight or obese. The ribs are not easily felt due to a thick layer of fat. The waistline is straight, and there is no visible waistline taper, or the belly may appear distended.
Proper Feeding Amount and Use of Weight Management Food
Drastically reducing the food for overweight or obese pets is risky. Even pets in need of weight management can face nutritional deficiencies if their food is excessively reduced. Instead, it's advisable to gradually reduce their weight using weight management food.
During feeding, it's crucial to adhere to the recommended feeding amount based on the pet's age, weight, and lifestyle, using a digital scale or a measuring scoop. Treats should not exceed 10% of the daily required calorie intake, and it's good to substitute a portion of the daily food intake with them. Feeding low-calorie, high-fiber vegetables that are satisfying is also a great option.
When choosing food for weight loss, opt for products low in fat and rich in fiber. Ensure they contain sufficient protein to maintain muscle mass. It's also good to check if the food contains L-carnitine.
Increase Activity and Consult a Veterinarian
Increasing activity levels can also aid in weight loss. Pets should engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Regular health check-ups are equally important. Through routine check-ups, potential diseases can be detected early, and weight can be managed back to a healthy level before obesity sets in. It's recommended to have a dedicated primary veterinarian and make regular visits to the animal clinic.
Obesity is a significant threat to pets' health. By providing proper nutrition, exercise, and regular check-ups, you can ensure your pet's well-being. Put in the effort to spend healthy and happy times together.
