Rice plays a significant role in the daily lives of Koreans, with mixed grain rice being known for its richer nutritional content compared to white rice. However, mixed grain rice may not be suitable for everyone. Let's take a closer look at the proper consumption of mixed grain rice and who should exercise caution.

Caution Needed in Consuming Mixed Grain Rice – Not Suitable for Everyone's Health?
When consumed correctly, mixed grain rice offers numerous health benefits. However, adjusting the quantity and ratio based on individual health conditions is crucial.

Health Benefits of Mixed Grain Rice and Proper Consumption

Mixed grain rice contains 2 to 3 times more vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber than white rice, making it beneficial for health. According to a study by the Seoul National University College of Medicine, women who consumed more white rice and less mixed grain rice had a higher risk of breast cancer. This suggests that the abundant dietary fiber in mixed grain rice may contribute to cancer prevention.

However, it is ideal to cook mixed grain rice with a combination of five grains. Mixing too many types of grains may reduce nutritional effectiveness and make digestion difficult. Research from Korea's Woosuk University indicates that a combination of five grains results in the highest protein and mineral content, along with excellent polyphenol effects. Therefore, it is advisable to mix 2 to 5 types of grains in appropriate proportions with rice.

Precautions for Individuals with Weak Digestive and Renal Functions

Mixed grain rice has a lower absorption rate, which can burden the stomach. Hence, individuals with poor digestive function should exercise caution when consuming mixed grain rice. Additionally, the gas produced during the digestion of dietary fiber may irritate the intestines. In cases of poor digestion, adjusting the ratio of white rice to mixed grain rice is recommended. Older adults or children with relatively lower digestive abilities may find a 3:7 ratio suitable.

People with weak renal functions may benefit more from consuming white rice, as grains rich in phosphorus may not be adequately excreted. In such cases, maintaining renal health by adjusting the consumption ratio is crucial.

When consumed correctly, mixed grain rice offers numerous health benefits. However, adjusting the quantity and ratio based on individual health conditions is crucial. To maintain a healthy diet, understanding one's body and adopting appropriate eating habits are necessary. While mixed grain rice contributes to health, adapting to individual circumstances is essential for optimal well-being.
