During winter hikes, the cold and strong winds can lead to frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite, on the other hand, results from the freezing of body parts and progresses from mild pain to discoloration and necrosis.

 

Layer Up for Effective Insulation

Wearing multiple layers of clothing is more effective than a single thick layer during hikes. Inner layers, in contact with the skin, should be made of Coolmax material, which absorbs sweat and dries quickly, effectively preventing heat loss. On top of this, wear several layers of shirts and jackets with waterproof, windproof, and moisture-wicking properties. Protect your face with a balaclava and a hat. Hands and feet should be kept warm with insulated gloves and socks, and consider using hand warmers when necessary.

 

Warm Drinks and Hydration

It's crucial to carry warm drinks in an insulated bottle during winter hikes. This helps maintain core body temperature and prevents dehydration. Be cautious with beverages high in caffeine, as they may promote increased urine production. Even though you may not feel thirsty in winter, consistent hydration is necessary to prevent dehydration.

 

Use Safety Equipment

To prevent accidents caused by slippery conditions, it's essential to attach crampons to your hiking boots. Using trekking poles helps maintain balance and ensures safe movement.

 

Adequate Warm-Up and Planning

Before starting the hike, spend 20-30 minutes stretching and doing light exercises to warm up muscles and joints. Ensure you complete your descent by 4 p.m. as winter nights can fall quickly and become extremely cold, increasing the risk of getting lost. Carrying a headlamp is advisable to be prepared for emergencies.
