However, recent research reveals that these artificial sweeteners can have a negative impact on the diversity of gut microbiota. The study, particularly focused on individuals using aspartame, demonstrated distinct outcomes.
In a study examining the gut microbiota of 9 participants using aspartame, 35 using other artificial sweeteners (sucralose, saccharin, stevia leaf extract powder), and 55 not using any artificial sweeteners (control group), results showed that users of artificial sweeteners other than aspartame had lower microbial diversity compared to the control group.
A decrease in the diversity of gut microbiota has been linked to metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes, allergies, immune disorders, and occasionally, the onset of cancer, as confirmed by various studies. This underscores the significant role our gut microbiota plays in our overall health.
As for aspartame users, they exhibited microbial diversity similar to other artificial sweetener users. However, they had a relatively higher presence of microbes known as 'Cylindrospermopsin,' which release toxins that can adversely affect the liver and nervous system, according to the study.
Artificial sweeteners are commonly added to most processed foods. However, excessive consumption, much like sugar, is not advisable. Artificial sweeteners can influence gut microbiota, raising blood sugar levels, and increasing the risk of diabetes. Aspartame, in particular, is 200 times sweeter than sugar, found in various products that many people consume inadvertently.
Further detailed research is needed to understand how the diversity of gut microbiota among artificial sweetener users affects their health. Specifically, exploring how changes in gut microbiota impact metabolic and immune disorders, and studying the effects of increased gut toxins on health requires additional research.
