According to recent research, cinnamon has been found to help lower blood sugar levels. Cinnamon is a spice made from grinding the bark of the cinnamon tree, primarily produced in Jeju Island, South Korea. In experiments conducted on overweight or obese individuals, participants who took cinnamon supplements showed significantly lower blood sugar levels.

The experiment involved 18 participants with an average age of 51.1 years who were overweight or obese, putting them at high risk for diabetes. Research targeting this population is crucial for blood sugar management. Participants followed a low-carbohydrate diet with low fiber and polyphenol content for the first two weeks of the experiment. Then, half of the participants consumed 4g of cinnamon supplements daily, while the other half took a placebo (carbohydrate maltodextrin). After a two-week hiatus from the supplements, the groups switched, and the experiment continued for another four weeks. Blood sugar levels were monitored every 15 minutes throughout the experiment.

As a result, participants who took cinnamon supplements had lower average and peak blood sugar levels compared to those who took the placebo. These effects are presumed to be due to the polyphenols present in cinnamon.

Cinnamon contains various polyphenolic compounds that may increase insulin sensitivity and aid in diabetes management through anti-inflammatory effects. Notable compounds include cinnamaldehyde, proanthocyanidins, coumarin, catechins, trans-cinnamic acid, and flavonoids.

Blood sugar management through cinnamon can be achieved in various ways. Typically, cinnamon can be consumed by adding it to food. For example, mixing a small amount of cinnamon into oatmeal for breakfast is recommended. Additionally, drinking cinnamon tea is a good option. Simply add cinnamon to boiling water along with milk or lemon to enjoy it as tea. However, excessive consumption of cinnamon can be harmful to health, so it's important to maintain moderate intake.

Finally, individuals interested in blood sugar management can benefit from regularly consuming cinnamon. However, consulting with a doctor or nutritionist may be necessary before making dietary changes or taking supplements.
