Among various types of cancer, which are the leading cause of death in South Korea, prostate cancer has recently shown the fastest increase. Over the past five years, prostate cancer has seen the highest rise in the number of patients, targeting men in particular.
Most Common Types of Cancer
In 2023, the most common types of cancer were thyroid cancer (408,770 cases), breast cancer (299,340 cases), and colorectal cancer (182,606 cases). Moreover, the types of cancer that have seen the greatest increase in the past five years include prostate cancer (39.6%), skin cancer (36.9%), and pancreatic cancer (34.6%). Prostate cancer, in particular, has emerged as the most common cancer among men.
Causes of Prostate Cancer Increase
There are several reasons behind the surge in prostate cancer cases. Firstly, with the increase in average life expectancy, prostate cancer has become more prevalent among the elderly population, occurring mainly in people aged 60 to 70. Additionally, as men become more conscious of their health and undergo health check-ups, early detection has become more common. Furthermore, a diet rich in fatty meats may also contribute to the development of prostate cancer. However, prostate cancer is also influenced by genetic factors, and individuals with a family history of the disease are at a higher risk.
Major Symptoms of Prostate Cancer
In the early stages, prostate cancer usually presents no symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, urinary problems may arise. Symptoms such as a narrowed urinary stream, urgency, nocturia, and hematuria may occur. Additionally, symptoms like pain during ejaculation or blood in semen (hematospermia) may manifest. If bone metastasis occurs, pain may arise in the pelvic or spinal regions, and numbness in the legs may occur.
Importance of Regular Screening
When detected early, prostate cancer is treatable, with a high survival rate. Therefore, men in their healthy 50s and older should undergo annual prostate cancer screenings. Especially for those with risk factors such as obesity, hyperlipidemia, or diabetes, proactive screening starting in their early 40s is advisable.
Prostate cancer responds well to treatment, and it can be prevented through early detection and regular screenings. Therefore, men should prioritize regular check-ups for their health and focus on improving their diet and lifestyle.
