Let it Out: Understanding Why Holding in Gas Isn't Good for You.

by OK2BU 2024. 4. 28.

In everyday life, passing gas can be a somewhat embarrassing and sensitive topic. However, it's a natural occurrence in our bodies. Nevertheless, the habit of holding it in can actually be detrimental to our health. For instance, holding in gas can lead to constipation.

Gas passing in our bodies is the process of expelling unnecessary gas. Air that enters while consuming food or gas produced in the intestines is expelled through the anus. Adults typically expel an average of 200 to 1500 mL of gas per day, which can occur around 13 to a maximum of 25 times a day.

Passing gas is a natural physiological phenomenon in our bodies, and it can sometimes produce unpleasant odors due to unhealthy foods or lifestyle habits.

However, the habit of holding in gas can lead to constipation. By holding in gas, you prevent timely expulsion of gas, resulting in abdominal bloating. This accumulation of gas in the intestines causes the colon to become distended. When the intestinal motility is weakened, and irregular bowel habits develop in this state, the risk of constipation greatly increases. Therefore, releasing gas instead of holding it in not only benefits health but also helps prevent constipation.

Especially if gas passes frequently or if there has been an increase in gas passing recently, it could be due to dietary reasons. Consuming fiber-rich vegetables can easily cause gas buildup in the stomach, leading to increased gas production and more frequent gas passing. Additionally, consuming dairy products can increase gas production, especially for those sensitive to lactose. Dietary intake and lifestyle habits can influence gas production.

On the other hand, if there's a sudden change in the smell of gas or if it smells unusual, it could be a sign of colon cancer. When colon cancer develops in the colon mucosa, it emits a foul smell due to decreased blood supply. If such odor persists, it's advisable to visit a hospital for examination.

Passing gas is a natural physiological phenomenon in our bodies, and it can sometimes produce unpleasant odors due to unhealthy foods or lifestyle habits. However, holding in gas too often can be detrimental to health, so it's important to expel gas naturally. If you find yourself holding in gas or notice any abnormalities in the odor, taking appropriate measures to maintain health is crucial.
