No Longer Just a Symbol of Aging: Understanding the Causes and Symptoms of Cervical Discs.

by OK2BU 2024. 4. 28.

In the past, disc degeneration was considered a degenerative condition caused by aging. However, recently, the number of cervical disc patients, including those in their 20s and 30s, has been increasing. In fact, the number of cervical disc patients in their 20s has increased by about 46% in the past 10 years. The biggest factor in the occurrence of cervical discs among young people is reported to be the excessive use of digital devices such as smartphones and PCs. In particular, incorrect posture when using digital devices for long periods greatly contributes to the onset of cervical discs.

Cervical discs can also cause symptoms such as unexplained headaches, eye pain, dizziness, and tinnitus.

When using smartphones or PCs, tilting the neck more than 15 degrees or leaning the neck forward while using them can strain the neck and exert excessive pressure on the cervical spine. This can lead to deformities in the cervical spine, such as straight neck or turtle neck, and ultimately result in disc damage over the long term.

The main symptoms of cervical disc vary depending on the location where the nerves are compressed. Typically, persistent pain from the back of the neck to the shoulders is experienced. Pain worsens when turning or bending the neck, and a tingling sensation resembling electric shock may be felt throughout the body. Fortunately, in most cases, surgery is not necessary, and symptoms can be relieved with non-surgical treatments alone.

Conservative treatments including medication therapy, injection therapy, physiotherapy, and exercise therapy, as well as procedural treatments such as nerve block, nerve modulation, and high-frequency nuclear modulation, are effective. In particular, nerve block and nerve modulation can be performed within a short time without bleeding, making them popular treatment methods with minimal burden on patients.

Cervical discs can also cause symptoms such as unexplained headaches, eye pain, dizziness, and tinnitus. Therefore, if these symptoms persist, it is important to seek early medical attention for a thorough examination. Neglecting cervical discs can lead to serious complications, so early detection and appropriate treatment are necessary.
