Hypertension is a common health issue among the elderly population. A recent study targeting hypertensive elderly individuals has revealed that taking an additional 3,000 steps a day can lower blood pressure. This study was conducted by a collaborative research team from the University of Connecticut and the University of Iowa, who conducted clinical trials to increase walking levels in hypertensive seniors aged 68 to 78. The results of this study were published in the "Journal of Cardiovascular Development and Diseases."
The research team provided participants with pedometers and blood pressure monitors, recommending an additional 3,000 steps per day. 7,000 steps a day is the recommended daily average by the American College of Sports Medicine. The study found that systolic blood pressure decreased by 7 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure decreased by 4 mmHg in the participants. This blood pressure reduction was associated with an 11% reduction in all-cause mortality, a 16% reduction in cardiovascular mortality, an 18% reduction in the risk of heart disease, and a 36% reduction in the risk of stroke, as reported by the research team.
Moreover, among participants already taking hypertension medication, 8 individuals experienced improvements in systolic blood pressure by increasing their step count. The study also confirmed that total step count had a greater impact on blood pressure reduction than walking speed or intensity.
Based on these results, the research team concluded that "modifying lifestyle habits can be as effective as systematic exercise or some medications" and that "exercise for the treatment and management of hypertension holds great value." While hypertension is a serious health concern affecting many elderly individuals, the habit of walking an extra 3,000 steps a day offers the potential to maintain and improve senior health. Elderly individuals can enjoy a healthier lifestyle and a better quality of life through exercise. These research findings will not only benefit hypertensive patients but also promote healthy habits across all age groups.
