In the midst of the well-known importance of going to bed early and waking up early, recent research has revealed a surprising fact: night owls, also known as "night owls," are at twice the risk of arterial sclerosis compared to morning people. This research finding, published in the international journal "Sleep Medicine," is gaining attention as it explores the correlation between arterial sclerosis and sleep habits.

The Link between Arterial Sclerosis and Sleep Habits

Arterial sclerosis is a condition where fat deposits accumulate in the blood vessels, posing a significant risk, especially among the elderly with high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This condition is known to lead to serious health problems such as heart failure or stroke.

 

The research team conducted a study involving 771 individuals aged between 50 and 64. Participants were divided into two groups: one with the night owl lifestyle, known as "night owls," and the other with the early riser lifestyle, known as "morning people." Subsequently, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to analyze the two groups in detail.

 

The Connection between Sleep Habits and Arterial Sclerosis

The results of the study showed that among 144 extreme morning people and 128 night owls, calcification of the coronary arteries causing arterial sclerosis was found in approximately 40.6% of the night owl group. In contrast, the extreme morning people group showed coronary artery calcification in only 22.2%, the lowest among the surveyed groups.

 

The research team analyzed these results to suggest that the habit of sleeping late disrupts the human circadian rhythm, makes eating habits irregular, and increases the risk of arterial sclerosis. Especially, night owls are more likely to be at risk for cardiovascular diseases, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the potential risk of arterial sclerosis and making efforts not to sleep too late.

 

Improving Sleep Habits for Arterial Sclerosis Prevention

Considering these research findings, there are practical pieces of advice to improve irregular sleep habits and reduce the risk of arterial sclerosis. Firstly, maintaining a consistent sleep pattern and trying to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day is crucial. Secondly, avoiding screens such as smartphones and computers before bedtime and creating a calm atmosphere are important. Finally, organizing the bedroom for comfort and keeping away items like mobile phones can enhance sleep quality.

Therefore, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and adopting appropriate sleep habits for arterial sclerosis prevention are essential. Improved sleep patterns have a positive impact on overall health and can aid in preventing serious diseases such as cardiovascular disorders.
