Cancer often originates in various organs such as the breast, prostate, and lungs. However, recent research has drawn particular attention to cases where cancer primarily metastasizes to the spine. According to recent study findings, this phenomenon may be attributed to the spine's bone stem cells secreting proteins favorable for tumor metastasis.

The bones in our body are known to originate from various types of bone stem cells. Specifically, spinal bones follow a distinct developmental path, evolving along a unique trajectory compared to other bones. This study assumed the existence of separate spinal stem cells based on these characteristics and explored how the properties of these stem cells contribute to tumors predominantly metastasizing to the spine.

Understanding the Rapid Spinal Metastasis in Cancer: Causes Unveiled.
Currently, research is underway to explore methods to block the MFGE8 protein to reduce the risk of spinal metastasis in cancer patients.

The research team analyzed the mechanism of spinal bone metastasis in tumors. They isolated the surface proteins of spinal stem cells from bones in animal models, analyzed the genetic activity of spinal bone-related cells through this, defined spinal stem cell biomarkers, and confirmed their functional roles.

The results revealed that the MFGE8 protein secreted by spinal stem cells is a key factor causing tumors to metastasize to the spine. The initial seeding sites of metastatic tumor cells were predominantly observed in spinal stem cells and bone marrow areas. Additionally, removing spinal stem cells in animal models resulted in a two-thirds reduction in the probability of tumors metastasizing to the spine. Analyzing stem cells from patients who underwent spinal surgery showed a higher likelihood of cancer cell interaction when spinal cells secreted the MFGE8 protein.

Currently, research is underway to explore methods to block the MFGE8 protein to reduce the risk of spinal metastasis in cancer patients. It is anticipated that this research will not only enhance the understanding of the impact of spinal stem cell characteristics on other spinal disorders but also elevate the potential for treating these conditions.
