During seasons with heavy rainfall, umbrellas become essential companions. However, leaving wet umbrellas as they are or storing them improperly can not only shorten their lifespan but also lead to skin problems. Therefore, let's explore proper umbrella maintenance methods.

Cleaning and Drying Umbrellas

It's better to rinse and dry wet umbrellas with water rather than letting them air dry as they are. Using tap water can wash away dust and impurities from rainwater, preventing contamination of the umbrella fabric. Additionally, using a neutral detergent once or twice a month to scrub the umbrella and rinse it thoroughly is recommended. This helps keep the umbrella clean.

While umbrellas are essential tools during rainy weather, improper maintenance can shorten their lifespan and cause skin problems.

Choosing the Right Drying Environment

Ideally, umbrellas should be dried in a shaded area with good ventilation, avoiding direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can weaken the waterproofing function of umbrellas, and storing them in a poorly ventilated place such as plastic bags can cause discoloration or rusting of the umbrella fabric. Therefore, it's best to dry them in the shade and dry them quickly.

Store with the Handle Downwards

When storing umbrellas, it's best to store them with the handle facing downwards. This prevents water from collecting around the handle area. Additionally, when unfolding the umbrella, always make sure the handle is facing downwards. Wiping the umbrella stand and ribs with a dry towel is also recommended.

Dealing with Rust

If the umbrella stand is rusty, it's recommended to clean it with toothpaste or acetone. Acetone is effective in removing rust, while the abrasives and bleaching agents in toothpaste help remove rust and clean the umbrella. Using tomato ketchup to clean rusty parts is also effective. The lycopene in tomatoes helps remove rust and prevent oxidation.

While umbrellas are essential tools during rainy weather, improper maintenance can shorten their lifespan and cause skin problems. Therefore, after using umbrellas, proper cleaning and storage are necessary to ensure their longevity.
