With Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) approaching, did you know that family conflicts can arise during the holiday season? According to a survey released on the 23rd, the most predominant topic of discussion among family members during the Chuseok holiday was related to "employment." This survey targeted 114 adults in their 20s to 40s, and similar trends were observed across various age groups.

As Chuseok approaches, it might be worthwhile to consider the importance of topic selection for smooth family conversations during the holiday season.

The survey revealed that 42.1% of the total respondents identified "conversations related to salary, company size, and employment" as the primary topic of family conversations during Chuseok. Following closely, discussions about "college entrance exams and grades" ranked second at 15.8%, while "marital status and timing" accounted for 14.9%, and "political opinions" were at 13.2%. The topic of "child planning and childbirth" remained at 6.1%.

Additionally, the survey results regarding Chuseok holiday plans were intriguing. The response "spending it separately" was the most common at 30.7%, followed by "having only one meal together" at 28.9%. Overall, 59.6% of the total respondents indicated a preference for spending the Chuseok holiday mostly alone.

Responses like "performing ancestral rites and setting up ancestral memorial tables" accounted for 21.9%, and "going on a family trip" was relatively low at 9.6%.

The reasons behind the burdensome nature of the Chuseok holiday were also explored in the survey. Among the respondents, 28.9% cited "mental stress due to intergenerational conflicts within the family" as the primary reason. Following closely, "time constraints due to travel and visiting relatives" stood at 27.2%, and "extended periods of driving or physical labor such as food preparation" ranked third at 22.8%. "Financial burdens due to allowances" also made it to the fourth spot with 11.4%.

An Eduwill spokesperson explained these findings by stating, "The acceleration of individualization and nuclearization of families appears to be influenced significantly by the three-year-long pandemic." They added, "Employment continues to be a major issue, and it seems that the prevailing trend during the Chuseok holiday is prioritizing personal relaxation over spending it with family."

As Chuseok approaches, it might be worthwhile to consider the importance of topic selection for smooth family conversations during the holiday season.
