Controversy has arisen as South Korean Member of Parliament, Kim Nam-guk, was spotted enjoying a holiday trip in Tokyo's Ginza during the Chuseok holiday. Kim had previously publicly expressed his opposition to Japan's release of contaminated water from Fukushima.

On the other hand, others criticize Kim's actions as contradictory, especially considering his strong criticism of the water discharge issue.

According to several media outlets, including Chosun Ilbo, Kim Nam-guk was recently captured in Ginza, Tokyo, during the Chuseok holiday, dressed casually in a short-sleeved T-shirt and carrying a backpack, resembling a regular tourist. During this time, he was observed waiting at a pedestrian crossing, taking out his mobile phone to capture a photo of the clock tower on the Wako Building, a symbol of Ginza.

In response to this, Kim's aides stated that they were unaware of his plans to visit Japan in advance. They explained that Kim's trip to Japan was part of "scheduled political activities, such as meetings with supporters," and he was covering the travel expenses privately, embarking on the journey alone without aides.

Furthermore, Kim's aides mentioned that "meetings requiring interpretation are being facilitated with the assistance of local acquaintances" and that they plan to continue meetings in southern Japan after the parliamentary audit.

Kim Nam-guk had previously left the Democratic Party amid a cryptocurrency speculation scandal and had faced a recommendation for expulsion from the National Assembly's Ethics Committee. He has also announced that he will not run for re-election in the next general election.

Despite his opposition to Japan's release of contaminated water from Fukushima, Kim's decision to visit Japan during the Chuseok holiday is seen as contradictory to his previous stance and has sparked controversy.

Moreover, Kim had previously shared a post on Facebook claiming that "contaminated water discharge from Japan could damage the DNA of children's reproductive cells and impair their reproductive functions, leading to birth defects in future generations." However, such claims have been criticized as contrary to scientific consensus, suggesting a lack of understanding of human biology and marine ecology or a disregard for scientific facts.

Public opinion on this incident varies. Some argue that there is little controversy surrounding Kim's visit to Japan during the Chuseok holiday, questioning whether his holiday trip is newsworthy or worth commenting on. They understand that Kim enjoyed a trip during the holiday, separate from his political activities, even if he had criticized the water discharge issue.

On the other hand, others criticize Kim's actions as contradictory, especially considering his strong criticism of the water discharge issue. They find it odd that he chose to travel during a time when he should be dedicated to parliamentary activities, such as the parliamentary audit.

Through these debates, Kim Nam-guk's actions are likely to continue sparking discussions about how they relate to his political stance and the domestic political situation. Ultimately, the public will decide how to evaluate this matter, and there will be keen interest in Kim's future actions and positions.
