According to recent research, it has been revealed that sperm counts in men worldwide have decreased by approximately 50% over the past 50 years. The study attributes this phenomenon to the significant role played by residual pesticides in our food. A research team led by Professor Melissa Perry of George Mason University in Virginia published a report in the American Journal of Environmental Health, stating that various compounds negatively affect men's reproductive abilities.

Through these research findings, it becomes evident that the decline in men's sperm counts is attributed to pesticides among various compounds.

The study demonstrated a strong correlation between two pesticides, organophosphates, and N-methyl carbamate, and the decrease in sperm count in men. Organophosphates are widely used compounds globally for various purposes such as nerve gases, herbicides, and insecticides. Additionally, the pesticide N-methyl carbamate is used to kill insects by damaging their brains and nervous systems.

The research team investigated sperm concentrations in 1,774 men from 21 countries worldwide, based on their exposure levels to organophosphates and N-methyl carbamate. Consequently, individuals, especially agricultural workers, exposed to pesticides showed significantly lower sperm concentrations compared to those with lower exposure levels.

This study highlights the presence of substantial pesticides in the everyday foods consumers commonly ingest. Particularly, 210 different pesticides were detected in 12 commonly consumed foods. In response, the research team recommended conscious consumers opt for organic foods to minimize pesticide exposure. Additionally, they advised peeling and thoroughly washing produce before consumption.

Furthermore, the research findings suggest that mobile phone usage may also impact sperm count. A study conducted by the University of Geneva and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute indicated that individuals who use mobile phones more than 20 times a day have a 21% higher likelihood of experiencing issues with sperm count. There was a tendency for lower sperm concentrations with increased frequency of mobile phone use.

Through these research findings, it becomes evident that the decline in men's sperm counts is attributed to pesticides among various compounds. Consumers are urged to pay attention not only to their food choices but also to their everyday mobile phone usage. Especially for men looking to expand their families, minimizing exposure to pesticides is crucial, emphasizing the need to heed the advice of experts.
