Graying hair is often considered a part of aging, but occasionally, it can occur at a young age. There are various reasons for this phenomenon, and let's explore the causes along with ways to address such situations.

Reasons and Remedies for Premature Graying in Young People.
Additionally, avoiding excessive smoking and alcohol consumption, and ensuring an adequate intake of nutrients such as vitamin B12, copper, zinc, and calcium, is essential.

Stress

Stress is a major contributor to premature graying. When stress increases adrenaline hormone in the body, it constricts blood vessels, leading to inadequate nutrient supply. This can result in insufficient production of melanin, the pigment responsible for hair color, leading to premature graying. Prolonged stress increases the secretion of norepinephrine in hair follicles, causing gray or white hair.

Diet

Extreme diets can deplete essential nutrients like vitamin B12 and folic acid, promoting the onset of white hair. These nutrients play a crucial role in the formation of melanin. Insufficient nutrition to hair follicle cells can lead to a shortage of melanin, making it easier for white hair to grow.

Genetic Factors

The quantity of white hair can be influenced by genetic factors. Genes that contribute to graying hair act as dominant genes, meaning if even one parent started graying early, there's a higher likelihood that their children will experience the same.

Vitiligo

Although rare, if white hair appears concentrated in specific areas, vitiligo could be considered. Vitiligo is a condition where melanin pigment is destroyed, resulting in white patches, and the likelihood of occurrence is higher in individuals aged 10 to 30.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism refers to an underactive thyroid hormone production. Thyroid hormones play a role in increasing the number of melanin cells. If these hormones are not adequately secreted, it can lead to a significant presence of white hair.

Pernicious Anemia

Pernicious anemia, caused by a deficiency of vitamin B12, hinders proper maturation of red blood cells. Research suggests that about 55% of patients experience premature graying before the age of 50.

When white hair appears, it's advisable not to pluck it. Pulling out hair can cause traction alopecia, where hair is pulled out, weakening the hair follicles. Weakened follicles may not support the growth of new hair effectively. Therefore, cutting or coloring white hair might be a better option.

Additionally, avoiding excessive smoking and alcohol consumption, and ensuring an adequate intake of nutrients such as vitamin B12, copper, zinc, and calcium, is essential. Maintaining a balanced diet and lifestyle is crucial for preserving healthy hair and scalp.
