Many individuals engage in walking exercises for blood sugar regulation. However, recent research reveals that, for effective diabetes prevention, it's not just about walking; it's about walking at a slightly brisk pace. Furthermore, as walking speed increases, the diabetes prevention benefits substantially rise.

Considering the varied speeds at which walking can be beneficial for diabetes prevention, establishing a suitable walking strategy aligned with individual health conditions and goals is essential.

 

Research Findings and Significance

A research team from Imperial College London, Iran University of Medical Sciences, and the University of Oslo analyzed ten studies published from 1999 to 2022, surveying a total of 508,121 individuals. The results indicated that walking at a speed of 3 km/h or more reduced the risk of diabetes by 15% compared to walking at a speed below 3 km/h. The risk continued to decrease with faster walking speeds, with a 24% reduction at speeds of 5-6 km/h and a remarkable 39% reduction at speeds exceeding 6 km/h.

 

The research team emphasized, "To improve health conditions, faster walking is recommended." However, the analysis also considered that those walking at a brisk pace might have a lower diabetes risk due to being generally healthier with higher muscle mass.

 

The Simplicity and Effectiveness of Walking

Nail Gibson, Senior Head of Care at Diabetes UK, highlighted that walking is a cost-effective, simple exercise that can be easily incorporated into daily life, such as commuting, shopping, or visiting neighbors. He explained, "Walking at a faster pace is better for health, but it's also important to maintain an exercise intensity that you can sustain consistently."

These research findings underscore walking as an effective exercise for diabetes prevention. However, it's crucial to pay attention to the speed aspect of walking.
