Therefore, sleeping in a dark environment may be more beneficial for mental health and cognitive function.

 

Increased Risk of Diabetes

Sleeping in a well-lit environment can diminish sleep quality and disrupt circadian rhythms. This disruption can increase insulin resistance, potentially leading to diabetes. Research suggests that sleeping in a room with dim light results in significantly higher insulin resistance compared to sleeping in a completely dark room. Therefore, maintaining a dark environment during sleep is crucial for diabetes prevention.

The habit of sleeping with lights on may contribute to obesity. People who sleep in bright environments are more likely to have higher body mass index (BMI) and larger waist and hip circumferences. Additionally, research indicates that light from electronic devices, such as TVs, can also have these effects. In a study involving over 44,000 women, those who slept with lights or electronic devices on had a 17% higher probability of gaining more than 5 kg in weight. This is believed to be due to the impact of artificial light on hormonal changes. Switching off lights from lamps, TVs, and electronic devices during sleep hours can promote better health.

Establishing a habit of sleeping in a dark environment, particularly by improving sleep conditions, is essential for achieving healthy sleep.
