Neglecting to wash your hands after using the restroom might seem like a trivial matter, but it carries serious health risks. This behavior increases the risk of various infectious diseases, collectively known as "this disease," with restroom-related actions posing an even greater threat.

Bacterial Proliferation and Risks from Urine

Let's explore the impact of not washing hands after urination. Urine provides an environment conducive to bacterial growth once expelled from the body. Even though you may not feel urine on your skin, handwashing is essential. Urine can unknowingly come into contact with various parts of our bodies. Especially when urine from using the toilet comes into contact with the skin, bacteria left on the toilet can spread. It is crucial to develop a habit of washing hands after using the restroom, particularly in public facilities where there's a risk of bacteria on door handles, toilet seats, and more.

Link to Infectious Diseases: Staphylococcus Aureus

Failure to wash hands after using the restroom can expose you to infectious diseases like Staphylococcus aureus. This bacterium can lead to conditions such as sepsis and bacterial pneumonia. Sepsis is a condition where inflammation spreads throughout the body due to bacterial infection, and without proper treatment, it can lead to fatalities. Pneumonia caused by Staphylococcus aureus progresses rapidly, requiring early intervention to prevent life-threatening consequences. Additionally, the risk of infection with Hepatitis A virus increases if hands contaminated with the bacterium come into contact with food or water. Therefore, meticulous handwashing is crucial to prevent the entry of Hepatitis A virus into the body.

Reality Check: Insufficient Handwashing Practices

According to a 2022 survey by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 66.2% of people in South Korea wash their hands after using the restroom. However, the practice of using soap during handwashing is only 29.4%, and washing hands with soap for more than 30 seconds is a mere 1.73%. Reasons cited for not washing hands include 'it's bothersome' at 44.4%, and 'it's not a habit' at 20.2%. Despite these reasons, it is crucial to thoroughly wash hands with soap after using the restroom. Until hands are washed, caution should be exercised not to touch the skin or items such as phones. Even if you haven't used the toilet, it's essential to cultivate a habit of thoroughly washing hands after using public restrooms.

Conclusion: The Significance of Healthy Habits

Handwashing in the restroom is one of the crucial habits to protect our health, shielding us from various infectious diseases. Avoid using inconvenience as an excuse to skip handwashing, and make efforts to change behaviors that have become ingrained habits. Healthy habits serve as the foundation for leading a healthy life, so let's not neglect handwashing and prioritize our well-being.
