According to research, consuming three servings of kimchi per day may reduce the risk of obesity in men, revealing intriguing findings. This study aimed to examine the correlation between kimchi consumption and obesity, involving 115,726 Koreans aged 40 to 60. The results showcase interesting differences between women and men.

Participants and Criteria

The study included 78,970 women and 36,756 men, totaling 115,726 participants. The research team defined obesity as a BMI index of 25 or higher, with abdominal obesity set at a waist circumference of 90cm or more for men and 85cm or more for women. Kimchi consumption data were collected through surveys, with one serving of kimchi defined as 95g for napa cabbage kimchi and dongchimi, and 50g for other types such as baechu kimchi, kkakdugi, and other varieties.

However, the research team emphasized that they have not fully proven the causal relationship between kimchi and obesity.

Correlation between Kimchi Consumption and Obesity

According to the study results, individuals who consumed up to three servings of kimchi per day had an 11% lower probability of obesity compared to those consuming less than one serving per day. The results varied by gender; women who consumed 2-3 servings of kimchi per day had an 8% lower obesity probability, while men who consumed three servings of baechu kimchi per day had a 10% lower risk. Even those who consumed a significant amount of kkakdugi experienced an 8% decrease in obesity risk for men and 11% for women.

Beneficial Bacteria in Kimchi and Immunity

The research team explained that these results are likely due to the abundant beneficial bacteria in kimchi, such as Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus brevis. These probiotics are expected to inhibit virus formation, strengthen the immune system, and prevent the pre-absorption of neutral fats.

Conclusion and Cautions

However, the research team emphasized that they have not fully proven the causal relationship between kimchi and obesity. Moreover, due to the high sodium content in kimchi, excessive consumption is not recommended. As kimchi contains a high level of potassium that can mitigate damage caused by salt, it is crucial to consume an appropriate amount. Since kimchi is a major source of sodium intake, maintaining a balanced amount is advisable to reap health benefits.
