The South Korean government, under the leadership of President Yoon Seok-yeol, convened an emergency economic meeting on the 31st to announce the "Chuseok Livelihood Stability Plan," designating October 2nd as a temporary holiday during the upcoming holiday period from September 28th to October 3rd.
The Chuseok holiday this year will span from September 28th (Thursday) to October 1st (Sunday), totaling 4 days. Following this, October 2nd (Monday) was originally designated as National Foundation Day, a public holiday. To provide a continuous holiday period and allow many individuals to have a day off on October 3rd (Tuesday) as well, October 2nd was additionally designated as a temporary holiday. This extended holiday will encompass a total of 6 days from September 28th to October 3rd, offering a significant opportunity for rest and leisure for many workers.
Due to the introduction of this temporary holiday, it's anticipated that from October 4th (Wednesday) to October 6th (Friday), many people will utilize their vacation days, enjoying a long holiday period of 12 days. Furthermore, October 9th (Monday) is Hangul Day, a national holiday, so when combined, it creates an opportunity for a 13-day extended break.
Through this Chuseok Livelihood Stability Plan, the government aims to boost domestic consumption and stimulate economic activity. An official from the Ministry of Economy and Finance stated, "We expect a positive impact on the service sector due to the designation of the temporary holiday." They further mentioned, "While there might be an outflow of tourists to overseas destinations, income can be generated in the domestic travel service sector. We plan to enhance measures such as lodging coupons and worker vacation support to promote domestic consumption."
However, the government will not implement toll exemptions for highways based on the designated temporary holiday on October 2nd. An official from the Ministry of Economy and Finance explained, "Since not all businesses may participate in the temporary holiday, the government will only provide toll exemptions for highways from September 28th to October 1st, taking this situation into consideration."
This Chuseok holiday is anticipated to provide people with a chance to enjoy extended rest and leisure. However, it's essential to remember that the temporary holiday is not a statutory public holiday, meaning not everyone may have the day off. Considering such changes, planning a personal vacation strategy is crucial.
