However, to live a long life, one must live a healthy one. To this end, medical researchers are exploring methods for achieving "healthy longevity." In this article, we'll delve into the vital role that hobbies play in healthy aging.

Engaging in hobbies can lead to a healthy and happy old age for seniors. Moreover, by adopting healthy habits, people of all generations can prevent mental health issues like depression.

 

#1. Positive Effects of Hobbies on Health

Engaging in hobbies has a positive impact on health, far beyond being a simple leisure activity. Previous studies have shown that hobbies can reduce loneliness and help prevent depression. However, many of these studies were conducted in specific countries or cultural settings, making it unclear whether the benefits apply universally.

To address this, a research team conducted a meta-analysis across 16 countries, surveying 93,263 individuals aged 65 and above regarding their hobbies and health status. The results revealed that individuals in the elderly population who enjoy hobbies reported better health, satisfaction, and happiness while experiencing fewer symptoms of depression.

Another international research team published findings highlighting the role of healthy lifestyle habits in preventing depression. The study identified seven healthy habits—smoking cessation, moderate alcohol consumption, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, maintaining social relationships, and avoiding excessive sedentary behavior—as crucial in depression prevention.
