According to recent research conducted at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, exercising between 7 AM and 9 AM might be the most effective for weight loss. This study examined the impact of exercise timing on weight loss and the findings shed light on how exercise time can make a difference.

The study involved 5,285 adults aged 20 and above who were registered in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cohort. Participants were randomly divided into groups that exercised in the morning (7 AM - 9 AM), afternoon (9 AM - 4 PM), or evening (5 PM - 8 PM). The researchers also attached activity trackers to the participants' hips to collect data on their physical activity and observed their body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, lifestyle habits, and more over a two-year period.

 

The study found that participants who exercised in the morning had an average BMI of 27.5, which was lower than those who exercised at other times (average BMI of 28.3). Additionally, those who exercised in the morning had an average waist circumference of 96 cm, which was thinner than those who exercised in the afternoon (97.8 cm) or evening (97.5 cm). These results held true regardless of age, race, gender, and other factors.

 

Dr. Kyu-ma Tong, the lead author of the study, commented on the results, saying, "The large-scale nature of the study is significant, but further research is needed to establish a causal relationship between morning exercise and weight loss."

 

Exercising in the morning on an empty stomach may be more effective at burning body fat. Moderate-intensity exercise for 20 to 30 minutes is recommended. However, be cautious as exercising on an empty stomach can lead to increased hunger immediately after the workout, potentially causing overeating.
