What happens if our rectum is damaged to the point where it can't function? The grim consequences are likely to be beyond imagination. Among these, rectal cancer stands out as a threat to both life and quality of life. In this article, we will explore the causes of rectal cancer and methods to prevent it.

Oops, My Anus! Preventing Rectal Cancer by Guarding Your Rectum.
Our lifestyle habits have a significant impact on the risk of developing rectal cancer.

What is the Rectum?

First and foremost, the rectum is a storage space for feces before they are excreted through the anus. When feces accumulate in the rectum, it triggers the urge for bowel movements. The colon, which is part of the digestive system extending from the end of the small intestine to the rectum, is about 150cm long. The rectum is a part of the colon responsible for sending feces to the anus.

Lifestyle Habits and the Risk of Rectal Cancer

Diet has the most significant influence on the onset of rectal cancer. Prolonged consumption of foods high in animal fats and saturated fats, or excessive intake of red meat and processed meat, can increase the risk of rectal cancer. Conversely, habits like not consuming enough fiber-rich vegetables and fruits, or excessive grilling of meats, are also considered risky. Additionally, lack of physical activity is one of the factors that can increase the risk of developing rectal cancer.

Symptoms of Rectal Cancer

According to data from the Central Cancer Registry in 2022, there are a significant number of patients, with 11,747 new cases of rectal cancer occurring in a year. In the early stages, rectal cancer often shows no symptoms, so by the time symptoms manifest, the disease has often progressed. The most common symptoms include the presence of blood mixed with stool and changes in the frequency or shape of bowel movements. Particularly, bright red or dark red bloody stools may occur.

Risks of Artificial Anus

If rectal cancer occurs within 3-5cm from the anus, there may be cases where rectal function can be preserved. However, if the cancer infiltrates the anal sphincter or if preserving rectal function is deemed impossible, a abdominoperineal resection surgery may be necessary. This surgery involves removing the abdominal and perineal regions, resecting the part of the rectum and colon where the cancer is located, and creating a new path for fecal discharge.

Preventing Rectal Cancer

To prevent rectal cancer, it is crucial to first reduce the consumption of high-fat and high-calorie foods. Additionally, prioritizing a diverse range of vegetables and fruits, while maintaining regular exercise, is necessary for maintaining intestinal health. Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, radish, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, garlic, and onions, rich in sulforaphane and allyl compounds, are beneficial for preventing rectal cancer. Furthermore, fiber-rich foods also contribute to the prevention of rectal cancer. Lastly, individuals over the age of 50 should undergo regular screenings to monitor the health of their colon.

Our lifestyle habits have a significant impact on the risk of developing rectal cancer. Avoiding excessive consumption of high-fat, high-calorie foods, prioritizing plant-based foods for a balanced nutrient intake, and maintaining regular exercise are essential for preserving our intestinal health. By doing so, we can prevent rectal cancer and strive towards a healthy future.
