Yellowtail, a fish that becomes even more delicious in winter, is being enjoyed in various dishes. However, did you know that yellowtail is known for being a fish with many parasites? Especially, whale tapeworm and yellowtail sashimi worm are frequently mentioned. Can these parasites enter the human body through the consumption of raw fish?

Enjoying Seasonal Yellowtail Safely: Dealing with Parasite Concerns.
Yellowtail is one of the delicious fish available during the season. Concerns about whale tapeworm and yellowtail sashimi worm are relatively minimal, and it can be safely consumed through farmed varieties.

Whale tapeworm typically inhabits the digestive system of whales. Its eggs are expelled into the ocean along with whale feces and develop by passing through various fish, such as shrimp and squid, using them as intermediate hosts. For this reason, yellowtail can also become a host for the whale tapeworm.

If whale tapeworm enters the human body through the food chain, it burrows into the intestinal wall, potentially causing digestive symptoms such as upper abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. However, since the whale tapeworm mainly resides in the digestive tract of fish, and yellowtail sashimi is made from the fish's muscle, it is less likely to be found in the parts where the whale tapeworm might be present.

Fortunately, the likelihood of encountering a whale tapeworm while consuming yellowtail is rare. Yellowtail is mainly farm-raised, and farmed fish do not have direct contact with whales that spread the tapeworm eggs. Moreover, as most farmed fish are fed with commercial feed, the chances of becoming hosts for whale tapeworms are minimal.

On the other hand, the yellowtail sashimi worm can parasitize the muscles of yellowtail. Luckily, the yellowtail sashimi worm cannot parasitize the human body. When consumed, it is naturally digested, so there is no need to worry too much.

Yellowtail is categorized based on weight: small yellowtail (3-6kg), medium yellowtail (6-8kg), and large yellowtail (8kg or more). The larger the size, the higher the fat content, resulting in better taste. However, when selecting fresh yellowtail, it is essential to pay attention not only to its size but also to its appearance. The freshness of yellowtail, which contributes to its delicious taste, is associated with rich amino acids. Stale yellowtail poses a risk of food poisoning. Fresh yellowtail is characterized by a firm surface, elasticity, and gloss, with clear eyes.
