Recently, a woman in the UK received an unexpected diagnosis of rectal cancer thanks to her pet dog, Brian. Lindsay Swayts (51), who had been suffering from hemorrhoids for over 30 years, began to sense something strange when Brian frequently sniffed around her. Concerned, she visited the hospital and received a stage 3 rectal cancer diagnosis. This case has gained attention as a remarkable instance of a pet detecting its owner's health condition.
Local media outlets, including the Daily Mail, shared Swayts' story, detailing how she discovered rectal cancer. Swayts, who had been struggling with pain and minor bleeding since May, had not paid much attention to it. However, when Brian continued to exhibit peculiar behavior by consistently sniffing around her buttocks, she found it odd and decided to seek medical attention.
Curious about her dog's unusual behavior, Swayts underwent a rectal cancer examination by medical professionals. The results revealed stage 3 rectal cancer, demonstrating Brian's special ability to detect his owner's health condition.
Expressing immense gratitude to her canine companion, Swayts remarked, "Brian led me to the hospital and saved my life." Having suffered from hemorrhoids since the birth of her first son 33 years ago, she found solace in the fact that Brian had finally detected the presence of cancer.
Currently, Swayts, diagnosed with rectal cancer in June, is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy at a hospital in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Despite the pain and challenges of sitting or lying down due to tumors, she credits Brian for helping her overcome the despair caused by cancer.
Cases of pets detecting their owners' health conditions and discovering diseases early are occasionally reported in the UK. Last year, another woman's pet dog exhibited unusual behavior, leading to the discovery of breast cancer, and a similar case was reported in June this year.
Rectal cancer is a rare type of cancer that occurs at the end of the colon in the rectum, with symptoms such as bleeding, pain, and itching. As these symptoms may resemble hemorrhoids, immediate medical examination is crucial if they occur.
