Anger, the Emotion that Boosts My Achievement Power.

According to the latest research, anger has been found to act as a powerful motivator in achieving challenging goals. Professor Heather Lynch and her team from the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Texas A&M University studied the relationship between anger and problem-solving abilities in over 1400 participants. In this study, participants were shown visual stimuli designed to evoke various emotional responses such as anger, joy, desire, and sadness, followed by an experiment involving solving word puzzles. In a different experiment, participants were encouraged to achieve high scores in a simple video game.

The research results showed that anger enhances people's ability to achieve their goals. Participants who experienced anger performed better, scoring higher or having shorter response times compared to those in a neutral emotional state. However, it was also noted that this increase in performance may come with an uptick in negative behavior.

 

Furthermore, the team analyzed data collected during the 2016 and 2020 US presidential election periods. They asked participants how angry they would feel if their supported candidate lost, and after the election, they confirmed whether the participants had actually voted and for which candidate. As a result, participants who responded that they would feel angry if their preferred candidate lost were more likely to have actually voted in the election.

 

Through these research findings, it was explained that "both positive and negative emotions can contribute to well-being" and that "in certain situations, utilizing negative emotions as a tool may be more effective."

 

This study reveals that the emotion of anger can be beneficial in achieving one's goals in challenging situations. However, it is important to learn how to handle anger appropriately in order to effectively utilize it. Therefore, it can be said that acquiring the ability to transform anger into a positive force and use it for problem-solving is crucial. Additionally, these research findings can be applied in our daily lives, providing motivation to achieve our goals.
